Mattress Care and Why It’s Important
We spend at least six to eight hours a day, if not more, on our beds. It is probably one of the most highly used pieces of furniture in your home so maintaining the quality condition of your purchased in the beginning. Typically, a standard mattress lasts for up to seven years while premium mattresses may last for ten plus years. Mattresses can be expensive, so choosing the right mattress in the first place is ideal; but if you already have a mattress, or if you simply want to maintain the quality of a mattress you may already own, there are a few things you can do in the way of mattress care.
Believe it or not, regularly rotating or flipping your mattress can positively affect the life expectancy of your mattress. Rotating the mattress means turning the mattress around 180 degrees; rotating does not include flipping so after you have rotated the mattress, you should be sleeping on the same side, just a different position head to foot. Flipping a mattress means turning it over so you are sleeping on the other side. If possible it is best to both flip and rotate your mattress. If you must choose, flipping is better than rotating because you are no longer sleeping on the same side; but if you cannot flip your mattress, then rotating can help to extend its life expectancy and comfort. If you are unsure if your mattress can be flipped, look for labels on the mattress for instructions such as “no flipping required.” Typically mattresses that can be flipped tend to be of better quality.
We tend to sleep in the same area of our mattresses night after night; but if you move the mattress around often so that you are sleeping on a different area, you can prevent wear and tear from daily use. Rotating your mattress is recommended every two months and more frequently when the mattress is first purchased. If you have a two-sided mattress, you should flip and rotate at the same time. By simply repositioning your mattress, you can maintain the feel and quality of your mattress, which adds to the longevity of your mattress and keeps you from having to purchase mattresses as often. Rotating and flipping your mattress can also add to the comfort of your mattress, not just extend its life expectancy.
